Subgroup 1, Series 1 contains Matriculation Books dating from 1876-1906. The books record individuals who have matriculated into the University. They are labelled by letters (ie ... "A", "B", "C", etc ...) and are arranged chronologically. Subgroup 1, series 2 consists of student records from the early years of the University. The records date from 1876 to 1939. In addition to Applications for Admission to the University and a record of the student's course of study, files sometimes contain photographs of the student, newspaper clippings, and correspondence. Files are arranged alphabetically by the student's last name. Subgroup 1, series 3 consists of student records from 1940 to 1955. The records are arranged alphabetically by the student's last name. Subgroup 1, series 4 consists of student records from 1956 to 1969. The records are arranged alphabetically by the student's last name. Subgroup 1, series 4 consists of student records from 1940 to 1955. Files are arranged alphabetically by the student's last name. Subgroup 2 contains the examination record books for both undergraduate and graduate students at the University. The records date from 1877 to 1967 and the bound volumes are arranged chronologically.

The first Registrar of the University, John M. Cross, was appointed by Daniel Coit Gilman on April 1, 1876. Cross was previously a tutor in Greek at Princeton University. He served as a Registrar at Johns Hopkins until 1880. To accomodate Cross's desire to continue teaching, he was also made the first associate in the Greek and Latin. In 1881 Cross left to become the headmaster of a school in Lawrence, New Jersey. After the departure of Cross the office was not formally filled until...
